Steve Jobs' Resignation Letter ...

Steve Jobs has officially resigned as CEO of Apple, and here is his resignation letter (- one of the most touching and direct communications I have ever had the "good fortune" to read -) to Apple and you, the Apple community (quote marks and formatting are mine.)

``To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

``I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

``I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

``As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

``I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

``I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve''

OS X Lion 10.7.1 Released by Apple

OS X Daily reports that Mac OS X 10.7.1 update has been released by Apple for all OS X Lion users to download.

I was happy to note that one of the most significant bug fixes pertains to dropping WiFi issues, so I hastened to download the update via the Apple->Software Update route. Other fixes, report OS X Daily, should address issues with HDMI and optical audio, Safari video, and migrating data to OS X Lion.

The update - at 17.4 MB through Software Update for most Mac users - took place fairly smoothly. There are also direct manual updates from Apple at:

Download OS X 10.7.1 Update (Client)
Download OS X 10.7.1 Update (Server)

Worrying ...

I was riding my lil ole 2-wheeler home from the office last evening when it showed signs of beginning to rain (dark clouds, slightly cooler Chennai warmth, a few ice-cold drops ...)

Fortunately I had a rain-jacket in my backpack along with my laptop, backup external hard-drive, cell-phones, screwdriver kit, thumb-drives, camera cards, etc .... So I stopped, unzipped the right compartment and took out my rain-jacket. Had just struggled into it (while waiting for an interminable red-light to change), when the light actually became amber!

I quickly finished putting on my jacket, slung my backpack on and congratulated myself that I'd managed to do all that just as the light changed to green.

Sure enough, the rain came down pretty heavily and continued all the way home.

Short-story: I made it home without much else happening -- besides the incessant honking, lane-cutting, zipping past "educated" drivers (both 2 and 4-wheelers) and the first thing I noticed was ... yeah, I had forgotten to zip up my backpack!!!

Again, fortunately, all my stuff was well-protected in plastic covering (you see, I'm a veteran 2-wheeler driver in Chennai, where the monsoons have to be experienced to be believed) and thankfully they all still work!

What's worrying is that up to just 6 months ago, I would never have forgotten to zip up! Age catching up???

The Lion Roars!

Installed OSX Lion last night! Began the 3.74GB download at 7.05PM and am up-and-running at 22.40. (Excuse poor quality of pix below -- taken in bad light at home!)

This includes time taken to back up my Snow-Leopard data!

That's awesome Apple! Not a hitch!

App Store getting updated

The time in Asia ... 16:38 hours ...

OSX "Lion" has been confirmed by Apple to launch on Wednesday, July 20, 2011.

It hasn't yet been released on a Mac App Store in Asia (as of 2.15pm). It is also now July 20 in Cupertino. Perhaps the release will be nearer 9 o'clock - Cupertino time?

Anyway, let's keep waiting and watching ...

iPhone 4.0 iOS 4.3.4

Today: updated my Apple iPhone 4 s/w to 4.3.4 ... the result closes any loophole in opening a malicious pdf, thereby adding to Apple's security! Awesome ... just 10 days after the loophole was discovered!

Slept in peace till lunch-time! :)

As reported by MacRumors.com (Mac App Store Intermittently Down for Some Users - MacRumors.com) the Mac App Store _is_ down! Here's a pic from my Mac at 07.41 this morning ...

Does this mean that the Lion is coming later today?

Skype 5.2

Well, today Skype released Version 5.2.0.1523 (an upgrade from its previous Version, obviously) for Macs.

Not much different that I could see after upgrading, and Skype's website indicates the same old stuff for the free version -- Skype-to-Skype calls; One-to-one video calls; Instant messaging; and Sending files. The upgraded version is supposed to allow better group video calls and group desktop sharing, but at least one person in the group needs to have the Premium (paid) version to be eligible for this.

If I notice anything earth-shatteringly different, beyond the slightly-improved speed of access, will post my findings here...

Apple's Lion and iOS5

Well I'm back after a month! Went holidaying for a bit and lazed for the rest. :) Hope I'll be able to keep this going now ...

Apple has promised its new Operating System -- Lion -- "in July" priced at just under $30! I registered on their website to be notified when the update is ready and intend to be one of the first to get it! From what I've seen of the Keynote videos and other "hands-on" blogs from some developers, it is awesome! (Wish I had a multi-touch trackpad on my oldish MacBook so that I can better enjoy the swipes and pinches which make Lion such an enjoyable experience!) Windows 8, too, has a few nifty multi-touch gestures built into it but nothing in my opinion to touch the king of the jungle!

Another upgrade promised "in the fall" by Apple is their new iOS5. As I'm primarily interested only in the iPhone 4 upgrade, I'll confine myself to that. Here, too, multi-touch gestures have been built into the OS and this, together with a new notification system and over 200 other tweaks, make iOS5 very, very desirable indeed. I've registered to be notified of this too and can't wait for it to happen!

Will write more when I finally upgrade both my MacBook and my iPhone 4. (Even toying with the idea of buying a new Mac with a multi-touch trackpad and the new Thunderbolt I/O port, just so I'll enjoy the Lion experience better!)

On a sombre note ...

Well, I guess today's one of my off-days ... I've been feeling blue from early this morning -- right from the moment, on my way to work on my 2-wheeler, that I saw this dog ... if that's what it was!

The poor creature had recently been run over by some heartless beast of a driver and three and a half legs were badly maimed and absolutely non-functional. In fact, "legs" is a term one would hesitate to use, in this particular case!

And yet ... the will to survive; the will to keep on moving was so strong, the poor creature "crabbed" (no other word will do) it's way along the extreme edge of the pavement-less street.

It heard me approaching from a long way away and I'll never forget the look in its eyes. Fear; apprehension; desperation ... all that and more was in the pleading look it gave me. As if to say, "Please don't hurt me anymore!" Tears welled up in my eyes as I slowed down and let it move along.

I don't know what happened as I couldn't bear to stop and watch any more. But, as I drove off, I hit a couple of pot-holes because my eyes were still all blurry. And I couldn't help thinking, "there, but for the Grace of God, (and some very good friends who helped me up when I was down) go I!"

Apple to Unveil Next Generation Software at Keynote Address on Monday, June 6, 2011

It's official! Apple today confirmed Steve Jobs will (at the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference on June 6) unveil Apple’s next-generation software. Jobs and other Apple execs will give us iOS 5 -- Apple's eagerly awaited software update to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Enhancements should include widgets and an overhauled notification system. Apple will also present its new iCloud service -- expected to be a suite of cloud-based services not limited to just a streaming music service. Apple’s press release is below:

``CUPERTINO, California—May 31, 2011—Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software – Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.

``WWDC will feature more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers. Mac® developers will see and learn how to develop world-class Mac OS X Lion applications using its latest technologies and capabilities. Mobile developers will be able to explore the latest innovations and capabilities of iOS and learn how to greatly enhance the functionality, performance and design of their apps. All developers can bring their code to the labs and work with Apple engineers.

``For more details, visit the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2011 website at developer.apple.com/wwdc.

``Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.''

M S Dhoni and Prakash Poddar

``... while Dhoni went from strength to strength, Poddar saw his career with the BCCI come to an abrupt end. He was in TRDO for just one year, after that the BCCI never came calling. The man who discovered Dhoni now spends his time shuttling between Kolkata and Pune, where his son resides. Ask him if he is sad to have been shunted out the way he was, and he breaks into the sordid laugh that old-timers reserve for such moments.
“Well, at least I managed to give Indian cricket Dhoni. That’s something and that’s my salvation.”''
I just had to post the above text before giving you the link

Amazing isn't it? Contrast the success of one person with the "not-so-successfulness" of the one who made it possible. Well ... what more can I say? Does this "happen only in India?"

Bullying - superstore style

Today (May 29, 2011 -- 08.45 a.m), we decided to buy groceries from a new store, for a change.

Bad idea!

There was no place at all to park, except next door under a tiny tree -- and that too after requesting the security guard's permission.

Next thing I knew, I heard an ear-splitting honk-honk from behind which made my heart race and my BP go up a few points! I looked around and it turned out to be a delivery van for the aforesaid superstore. The driver, in most rude terms, told me to move away as he needed to park there in order to deliver some stuff. I naturally refused, as I was waiting for my wife who was a paying customer within the "superstore"!

He then threatened to call the manager, and promptly did when I refused to budge. When the manager came out to add his two-bits to that of the driver's, I continued to stand my ground because I knew I was in the right. I was parked away from the store and nobody from the store had any right to make me move.

The driver then moved his van dangerously close to my little two-wheeler, (see pic) ...

... and my heart-rate and BP went up a few notches more! All this is not good for me as I am already on heart medication. (A closer look at how close the van came to my two-wheeler can be seen in the pic below. Thank goodness I was not sitting on it at the time, as my foot or something might have been injured!)

What's more surprising, (though why I can't tell you) is that the loaders were more polite! It is a very poor reflection on where our society's going when the so-called uneducated class has more manners than the so-called educated!

Well I for one have come to a decision. Neither I nor any member of my family (and I'm requesting via this post all members of my extended family and my friends to support me in this) will never ever buy another product made by this brand. Nor will we ever visit the "superstore" again for anything!

Childish? May be. But any store that unjustly takes the side of its errant delivery boys will be boycotted by me every time!

Helmets in Chennai!

As I write this, the deadline (yes, another one!) nears -- May 28 -- for all us poor, hot, sweaty two-wheeler riders in Chennai to beware (again!) because the "compulsory helmet" law is being enforced (again!) This means that the righteous and incorruptible traffic police will have their already-enormous workload increased, apprehending and spot-fining (receipt?) guilty and criminal-like two-wheeler riders who dare to flout this law!

Now here's what I think ... for what it's worth. While I agree that wearing a helmet is a good idea (and I have always worn one from the time I began worrying about my personal safety on our clean, well-managed, well-regulated and politely-used roads) I do believe this should be a matter of personal choice and not ENFORCED! Riders of two-wheelers are not children and can surely decide for themselves. How can this guarantee to bring down the number of fatalities? My thinking is that, if traffic rules are strictly enforced (with emphasis being on EDUCATING riders and drivers, rather than APPREHENDING them), and offenders officially punished, rather than being let off for whatever reason, fatalities will come down.

If, however, the law-makers in Chennai are determined to ENFORCE the "helmets-for-two-wheeler-riders" law -- citing personal safety and bringing down fatalities as reasons -- then they should, for the same reasons, ENFORCE the following safety rules as well:-
  • Seat-belts to be made compulsory for all drivers and passengers of all motorized three- and four-wheeler modes of transportation, including
    • auto-rickshaws
    • pick-up 3-wheelers
    • taxis
    • buses
    • lorries, and
    • private cars - no matter how influential the driver or owner may be.
    • Passengers of buses may be exempt from wearing any headgear or seat-belts, of course.
  • NO overloading and over-crowing of all three- and four-wheelers modes of transportation, including
    • cycle-rickshaws
    • auto-rickshaws (especially the school-pick-up ones)
    • taxis
    • lorries, and
    • private cars - no matter how influential the driver or owner may be.
  •  NO stopping beyond the demarcated areas at signal lights by any transport, including
    • cycles
    • cycle-rickshaws
    • non-motorized three-wheelers (e.g., those used for transporting water bottles ...)
    • bullock carts
    • motorized two-wheelers
    • auto-rickshaws
    • taxis
    • buses
    • lorries, and
    • private cars - no matter how influential the driver or owner may be.
  •  NO illegal cutting across demarcated lanes by ANY transport, including
    • cycles
    • cycle-rickshaws
    • non-motorized three-wheelers (e.g., those used for transporting water, etc.)
    • bullock carts
    • motorized two-wheelers
    • auto-rickshaws!
    • taxis
    • buses!!
    • lorries, and
    • private cars - no matter how influential the driver or owner may be.
  • NO illegal parking anywhere, especially on main, arterial roads by ANY transport.
  • NO speeding.
  • NO jay-walking by pedestrians ... especially if pavements exist.
  • Pavements NOT to be used for any purpose other than for pedestrians.
  • Where no pavements exist, these MUST be built.
There are a lot more we can look at but the above will do for a start. (And hopefully signal lights will be allowed to work automatically and NOT by some trigger-happy traffic constable who sees it as his duty to manually operate some hidden switch at signals.)

Will we ever see all of this happening?

My MacBook - Battery Maintenance

The battery calibration for my MacBook was achieved via these steps:

  1. Plugged in the power adapter and fully charged my battery until the LED on the power adapter plug changed to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar showed "charged."
  2. Used my MacBook while the adapter was plugged in for a couple of hours.
  3. Disconnected the power adapter while my MacBook was still on and worked on battery power until the battery got low, and the low battery warning dialog appeared on screen.
  4. Saved my work but went on "using" my MacBook until it automatically went to sleep.
  5. Turned off the MacBook (I could also have allowed it to sleep) for a minimum of five hours.
  6. Connected the power adapter and used my MacBook until the battery was fully charged again.
Hope this helps others maintain their batteries for a long, trouble-free life!

Updated to Snow Leopard today!

So I finally took the plunge and asked somebody to buy for me the latest available CD of Mac OS X Snow Leopard. And he did! Although not strictly "the latest" it was the latest "available" at his point of purchase -- 10.6.3. I thought I'd share for posterity my experience in installing the OS ... So, here goes ... my version of a step-by-step ...

1) Ensured that I backed up my old OS X Leopard files FIRST! Quite quick (about an hour) because I didn't have that many files on my hard disk, being one of those people who backup and delete unused dox, etc., quite regularly. I used the tried-and-trusted Disk Utility method rather than Time Machine.

2) Disconnected ALL peripherals and then bunged in the installation CD and began to follow the prompts ... quite simple and the only worry I had was when, 10 minutes into the install (again -- the whole thing took me just a little bit over an hour because I don't have a huge lot of data) it rebooted without warning. Fortunately I have had experience with other OSs doing this *by design*, so I didn't touch anything and waited patiently for about 30-40 seconds and, right enough, my disk-drive made a slight noise and the install process seamlessly resumed from where it left off.

 3) When the installation completed (again, me waiting patiently without touching a single key), I got back my very own desktop with a changed menu.

4) The system then rebooted for the second and last time during the installation (don't remember if it was before I got the Setup Assistant menu or after) and I then received a "Welcome" flash-like presentation in various languages which ended with this pic ...

Quite attractive, I thought!

After it verified for itself that I didn't need any further set-up tweaks, it said ...
 5) I pressed "Continue" and that was it! I got back my own Leopard-personalized desktop, short-cuts and everything! So familiar and comforting! Everything had gone smoothly, I thought -- "Praise be ...!" and thanks to Apple for a painless operation.

6) I remembered to click through my Apple -> Software Update sequence and ...
... the system proceeded to check for new software, which it found and, after I confirmed it, downloaded and installed the first set of updates ...

7) Once that was over and the system restarted, it automatically checked again and found some more updates which were necessary -- including some updated fonts, an update to the DVD utility and other stuff which I allowed it to download and install.
8) And that was it ... a truly painless experience. Everything just worked! I'm now posting this entry from my new 10.6.7 Mac OS X Snow Leopard!

9) All my old, trusted Apple-compliant software worked; my email and docs were intact; my network passwords and settings remained; my Firefox and Safari bookmarks were intact and even some 'older' non-Apple apps worked. I had to download the updated Gimp and Onyx software but that was child's play.

10) Guess I may need to download some more stuff once I operate the system some more; but for now I'm truly happy with this experience! Thanks again, Apple!

New Apple updates

In addition to the iOS 4.3.2 software update (which I wrote about on Friday, 15 Apr 2011,) Apple released Safari 5.0.5 (which applies to Windows and OS X versions) plus a new Security Update 2011-002 for Mac OS X. All available through Apple's download pages as well as the Software Update.

The size of the Leopard download at around 240+MB is considerably larger than that of Snow Leopard.

iPhone iOS 4.3.2

Today Apple released iOS 4.3.2.

This build claims to fix a bug which caused video to go blank or 'freeze' during Facetime calls. Also, an iPad bug that kept a few international 3G users from connecting to their local networks.

The new release also contains security updates.

On my iPhone 4 the battery drain issue which began with the last build (iOS 4.3.1) appears to have gone away. However, as I updated just this morning, its early days yet.

Ensure that Google search always defaults to google.com and not to google.co.xx

Ever experience a wee bit of irritation when you type google.com and the search page redirects itself to google.co.xx (xx being the country you are currently in?)

If you DON'T want this to happen, simply type /ncr after google.com

and you'll get the familiar google.com search page.

Office for Mac 2011 SP1 Coming ...

Microsoft will release Office for Mac 2011 service pack 1 (SP1) today/tomorrow, so say Office for Mac.

The aim is "increased stability, security, and some new features to the suite—including improved Outlook syncing support—as well as some performance enhancements."

SP1 should enable calendar syncing between Outlook for Mac and Apple's iCal, iPhone, etc., although syncing with our Google calendar may still not be an added feature. The latest MobileMe, too, will not be able to be synced.

A few additional Outlook updates possibly included in SP1: Support for Exchange based server-side rules; Redirect button; Resend button; and Enabled editing of existing messages.

Anti-corruption

I am against corruption --- anywhere in the world, in any sphere --- not just in India, not just in politics, not just in the police force, the army, the navy, the airforce, the commercial pilot licensing authorities, the academies, the passport offices, the regional transport authorities, the autorickshaw powers that be, television, real-estate, electricity, telecomm ...

And my support will always be with those who are also against corruption.

Long live those with the courage to stand up, sit down, go on hunger strikes - whatever - in support of their beliefs!

Pl share this as well ...

Delete files/folders, bypassing your Mac's trashcan

One of the "missing" features on a Mac (according to me) is the absence of the Windows equivalent of Shift-Del to directly delete unwanted files without having to move them to the Trash and then deleting them from there.

Careful, though! You don't want to delete your entire hard disk by mistake. Check everything before you press Return!

Hope this workaround helps...

Launch your Terminal app and type

rm -rf
(note: press the spacebar after you've typed -rf)

Highlight files/folders you want to delete.

Drag them to your Terminal window (and you should see details of the files/folders you just dragged).

Again ... pl be Careful! You don't want to delete your entire hard disk by mistake. Check everything before you press Return!

Press Return to enter the command.

This will bypass the trash.
(note: you will not get any audio paper-crush feedback)
